39. Lia (Lea) Levit [see pictures] (Υosef-Halevi , Arye Lev ) was born on May  9 1915 in Russia, Buynaksk (Temir-Khan-Shura), Dagestan . She died on Mar 1 2001 in Israel Kfar Saba. She was buried in Israel Petach Tikva (bloc יא site קכו).

Lia married Meir Dgani (Korn Maximilian Yechiel ) [see pictures] son of Naftali Korn and Eva Hava Kranz on Sep 26 1947. Meir was born on Jan  12 1915 in Austria Viena. He died on Feb 24 1994 in Israel Petach Tikva. He was buried in Israel Petach Tikva (bloc יא site קכו).

Meir Dgani was born in 1915 in Austria in refugee camp near Vienna . When he was 3 years old, the family moved back to Poland to Tarnobrezg near Krakov.

At the age of 15 he left home and learned at high school in Krakov.

In 1935 when he was 20 he immigrated to Israel (then Palestine ). When he reached Israel , Meir changes his name from Maximilian Korn to the Hebrew name Meir Dgani.

Meir Dgani always looked upon himself as a person whose aim was to assist the implementation of the Zionism and spreading the Hebrew education among the youth in Israel .

In 1937 he began his studies in the Hebrew University on Mount Scopus as a regular student.

In 1937 due to the Arabs revolt he took a pause in his studies and joined the “Hagana”. He was enlisted to the Palestine Police (days of the British Mandate of Palestine) and served as a guard (‘Noter’) in Jerusalem until 1942. Then he continued his studies and got master’s degree in Literature and History.

In 1938 he returned to Poland to visit his family. It was the last time he saw his parents and his older sister (Haya) and her family.
After he completed his studies, he worked as a teacher in Kibutz Ashdot Yaacov.

In 1947 back at Jerusalem , he met Lia Levit (my mother) and got married.
The family moved to Petach-Tikva. At first he worked on the “Gordon’s Gymnasia Achad-Ha’am”  at Salomon street . When it was decided in the municipality to build a new high school, Meir Dgani took part in its establishment. This was “ Brener High School ”. He worked there as a senior teacher and vice principal until his retirement. He was so devoted to school that all his illnesses occurred during school vacations.

Even after his retirement he remained active. He was a volunteer in the Civil Guard; he manages a scholarship fund for excellent pupils and gave lectures in the city’s pensioner club.

He passed away in 1994. His funeral was held on Purim so (as one of the teachers, Ester Shtreit Vorzel, who attended it said) the teachers would be able to take part in the funeral without being absent at school.
